Installing Mole Mesh

We regularly get asked how best to install mole mesh.

By now we have more than 15 years of experience selling mole mesh (or mole nets, as our Belgian neighbours call it).

We can tell you that a mole needs only 5 cm of soil to dig a tunnel. If you lay the mole mesh 5 or 10 cm deep, there is a good chance the mole will end up between the mesh and the lawn. That would be a waste of all your effort and money. That is why we recommend laying the mole mesh directly under the turf or, in the case of seeding, finishing it off with 2 cm of soil on top of the mesh. This way you will achieve the best result. The grass grows into the mesh and it becomes impossible for the mole to create molehills. We are also often asked whether it makes sense to bury the mesh vertically along the edges of the plot.

You can choose to fold the mesh over at the sides. This way you ensure the mole can no longer get under your lawn at all.

You can also choose to install the mesh only vertically. In that case, it is best to do this at least 75 cm deep.

By far most of our customers install the mole mesh only horizontally. If there is a mole at the side of your plot, you will find that it does not come more than a metre under your lawn. The mole would then have to drag the soil quite a distance, and it considers that too much work.
